Galveston Island

From the Gulf waves to the amazing wetlands of Galveston Bay our barrier island averages a mile and a half wide, but looks like heaven to the millions of birds that migrate through here every year.  And it looks just as good to all the people who come here.

But it's terribly fragile
That's why we're:

  1. Acquiring and preserving wetlands and coastal prairie uplands to support the bird, fish, and wildlife.
  2. Encouraging impact studies of development on the natural environment before permits are issued.
  3. Working to limit high-density development in environmentally sensitive areas.
  4. Promoting historical, archaeological and scientific studies.

Our island economy
Depends on it.  Texans' multi-billion dollar sport and commercial fisheries can't exist without wetlands, and eco-tourists also need more reasons to be here.  Souvenir t-shirts are not enough.

  •  Texans aren't growing wetlands and habitat any more - despite valiant efforts to recreate them, the battle is being lost.
  • Our rare natural environment is increasing in value like no other investment.

We can't afford to squander it.

 The Objective
A coastal connection of preserves

Making The Connections

  • A system of preserves, connected by hiking trails and made up of new preserve areas as well as existing ones from the East End Flats to the Galveston Island State Park.
  • Protect access to link the parks and preserves and to keep pier and wade fishing, canoeing, kayaking and boating available.
  • Optimize the commercial value of Galveston's natural resources -- they really are resources we must preserve.

How do we do it?

Mainly through the efforts of people who care enough to give their time and their talents to see that it gets done.  Our financial support comes from:

  • Membership Dues
  • Gifts of all sorts and sizes; GBTB is a not-for-profit charitable corporation and we encourage tax-advantaged gifts, trusts and bequests
  • Grants from public and private sources are being pursued
