Galveston Beach To Bay Preserve

Galveston Beach To Bay Preserve, Inc.

First, a few words about what we do, which is mainly to make sure Galveston Island continues to have what makes it unique – the fascinating natural features that attract people and businesses and make it a great place to live.

Our wetlands, uplands and beaches are a rare commodity.  Their increasing scarcity makes them increasingly valuable.  Galveston Beach to Bay Preserve works to establish preserves and to protect threatened areas of the Island.  Without the support of our people and businesses, our loss of the Galveston lifestyle will accelerate, and Galveston will have less value to the billion-dollar industries and the smaller businesses our island supports.

We are asking for your help as we acquire land for preserves and as we help other organizations do the same.  Look us over.  Check our website.  Join us in saving the most universally valuable resources for the lifestyle and economy of Galveston.

Galveston
Island – from the Gulf waves to the amazing wetlands of Galveston Bay our barrier island averages a mile  and a half wide, but it looks like heaven to the millions of birds that migrate through here every year.  And it looks just as good to all the people who come here.

But it’s terribly fragile. That’s why we’re:

·    Acquiring and preserving wetlands and coastal prairie uplands to support the birds, fish and wildlife

·    Striving to preserve native flora and fauna

·    Encouraging impact studies of development on the natural environment before permits are issued

·    Working to limit high-density development in environmentally sensitive areas

·    Promoting historical, archaeological and scientific studies

Our island economy depends on it – Texans’ multi-billion dollar sport and commercial fisheries can’t exist without wetlands, and our eco-tourists also need more reasons to return here.   Souvenir t-shirts are not enough.

·     Texans aren’t growing wetlands and habitat any more – despite valiant efforts to recreate them, the battle is being lost

·     Our rare natural environment is increasing in value like other investments in rarities—the more scarce it becomes, the more we value what remains.

·     We can’t afford to squander it

The objective a coastal connection of  preserves

·        Establish a system of preserves, connected by hiking trails and made up of new preserve areas as well as existing ones from the East End Flats to Galveston Island State Park

·        Protect access to link the parks and preserves and to keep pier and wade fishing, canoeing, kayaking and boating available

·        Energize the commercial component as well as the lifestyle component of Galveston’s natural resources – they really are resources we must preserve.
